Metrum Research Group is a growing organization and world leader in biomedical modeling and simulation services and solutions. We are seeking an experienced financial leader to join our Senior Leadership Team as Vice President of Finance, helping to guide our continued growth and success across both our consulting and PaaS business lines.

As VP of Finance, you will serve as the company's most senior financial leader, responsible for overseeing all financial operations, strategic planning, and reporting functions. This is a hands-on leadership role that requires both strategic vision and willingness to engage in day-to-day accounting operations, when needed. You will directly manage the accounting team and serve as backup to the Sr Financial Accountant while working closely with the Executive Team to drive business growth. The VP of Finance is a member of the Senior Leadership Team and will contribute to the overall strategy of the organization.

This position reports directly to the CEO. The preferred location is Boston, MA (remote/hybrid).

Key Responsibilities

Financial Strategy and Leadership

  • Guide strategic decision-making through comprehensive financial modeling and forecasting
  • Accountable for all financial operations including accounting, financial planning and analysis, budgeting, treasury, and tax functions
  • Develop and implement financial strategies aligned with company growth objectives across consulting and PaaS business lines
  • Serve as a member of the senior leadership team and contribute to overall company strategy
  • Successfully manage two distinct but complementary business models

Revenue Stream and Financial Management

  • Conduct detailed revenue stream management across both business lines
  • Track consulting services revenue and profitability metrics on a project-by-project basis, ensuring accurate billing and profitability analysis
  • Monitor and model PaaS subscription revenue, including Monthly/annual recurring revenue (MRR/ARR), Customer acquisition and retention rates, Pricing strategy development
  • Develop sophisticated financial models to: Forecast company performance (revenue, expenses, EBIT, net income), Predict consulting services pipeline performance, Forecast PaaS product growth and scalability, Create strategic business development scenarios

Cost Optimization and Capital Allocation Guidance

  • Analyze and optimize cost structures for consulting team utilization and productivity, PaaS development and maintenance expenses, Technology and infrastructure costs
  • Provide guidance to CEO and Executive Team on investment priorities across consulting team expansion, PaaS product R&D, launching new offerings, support function budgets such as marketing, HR, etc
  • Build forecast models for new offerings to assist in feasibility assessment
  • Identify opportunities to improve efficiency and reduce overhead while maintaining growth potential

Financial Reporting and Compliance

  • Develop comprehensive financial reporting providing visibility into consulting services project profitability, PaaS product subscription metrics, combined company financial performance
  • Complete monthly financial statements and deliver executive review
  • Oversee and serve as senior contact for annual financial audits
  • Manage relationships with external auditors, oversee audit material preparation and coordination, review and comment on audit reports
  • Work with external accountants to complete annual tax return and lead tax strategy (R&D tax credits, etc)
  • Ensure compliance with revenue recognition standards, financial reporting requirements, potential investor and Board of Directors reporting needs

Strategic Growth and Operational Leadership

  • Work closely with leadership to identify effective business models for new service and product offerings, explore market expansion opportunities, assess potential acquisition targets
  • Provide strategic financial analysis to support decision-making
  • Optimize financial processes and systems to support scaling operations

External Relations and Team Management

  • Participate in capital raising initiatives and investor relations
  • Partner with internal managers to develop and track annual budgets, provide budget analysis and guidance, facilitate budget planning and provide tools and templates for budget management, reduce and control costs associated with vendors
  • Directly manage and develop the finance team, providing mentorship and oversight
  • Perform hands-on accounting tasks as backup to Sr Financial Accountant
  • Manage relationships with external financial partners, including: auditors, banks, tax Accountants, investors, vendors

Cross-Business Strategy

  • Balance predictable software revenue with variable consulting service income
  • Provide insights driving growth across consulting and technology product aspects of the business
  • Create a balanced approach that supports growth in both consulting and PaaS segments
  • Ensure business units can cross-sell with no accounting-related friction

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; MBA and/or CPA preferred
  • 10+ years of progressive financial management experience, including significant experience as a Controller or similar senior financial role
  • Background in managing both consulting and software revenue streams
  • Strong understanding of both professional services and PaaS business models
  • Proven experience in developing and managing complex departmental budgets
  • Strong track record of collaborating with department managers on budget planning and tracking
  • Proven team management experience, with demonstrated success in leading and developing accounting teams
  • Very strong technically, for building dashboards and real time data applications
  • Strong hands-on accounting skills and willingness to engage in day-to-day accounting operations
  • Proven experience in financial planning, reporting, and analysis
  • Extensive experience managing annual financial audits and maintaining relationships with external auditors
  • Experience with QuickBooks and/or related financial management software
  • Proven experience in capital raising (debt or equity), investor relations, M&A activities, and due diligence
  • Experience with scaling financial operations in growing companies
  • Analytically rigorous

  • Capable of providing insights that drive business development
  • Expert knowledge of standard financial regulations
  • Strong leadership and communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in life sciences or healthcare industry
  • History of implementing, optimizing, and integrating financial systems and processes
  • Experience managing audits for companies with multiple revenue streams
  • Experience implementing budget management systems and processes

Physical Demands

The job frequently requires working at a computer terminal, standing or sitting, and the ability to operate the computer with proficiency.
